IMG_0374 The United States Air Force Heritage Flight consisting of a A-10 "Thunderbolt II", a F-16 "Viper", and two P-51 "Mustangs" pass by show center during the 2009 Thunder Over the Boardwalk air show held in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The United States Air Force Heritage Flight program was established in 1997 to commemorate the Air Force's 50th anniversary. It involves today's state-of-the-art fighters in close formation with World War II, Korean, and Vietnam era fighters such as the P-51 Mustang and the F-86 Sabre. The flight's mission is to safely and proudly display the evolution of the United States Air Force airpower and to support the Air Force's recruiting and rentention efforts as well as honoring all those who have served. There are 18 pilots in this program. The modern Air Force fighters are piloted by the six Air Combat Command (ACC) single-ship demonstration teams and the vintage aircraft are flown by 10 civilians, including former Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine pilots. In addition, two active duty F-4 pilots joined the program in 2005. Source: Air Combat Command

Thanks, Tony! The air show in Atlantic City definitely did present some difficult lighting conditions, one minute it was nothing but blue skies the next minute it was cloudy. But I think what makes the air show in AC so difficult to shoot is how the fact that there wasn't really any place you can move to control the angle at which the light was entering the camera lens, not to mention the fact that the aircraft are forced to fly so far out to sea. Anyway, thanks for all your wonderful comments, Tony, hopefully I'll have some more impressive photographs to share of the Thunderbirds after I get back home from the Cleveland Air Show.

Thanks, Craig! I think this is the second or third I've seen four aircraft participating in the USAF heritage flight, either way I seem to always luck out with at least one good photograph of the formation.

Nice photos. Love the Mustangs. Where's the Wright flyer, America's original air superiority machine!
